Po Thi
2014, documentary film, 19'52"

YANAGISAWA Eisuke, a researcher in the National Museum of Ethnology (國立民族學博物館), Japan, started his research on the gong music culture in the Central Highlands of Vietnam since 2006. Vincenzo Della Ratta has keen interests in the culture studies of the Austronesia's living in the western region of Southeast Asia. The two artists worked together and filmed the documentary "Po Thi", depicting the ritual held by the Jarai people in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The Jarai is an ethnic minority group in Vietnam, speaking a language of Austronesia instead of Vietnamese. The Jarai people believes the spirits of the dead cannot return to their ancestors, until the ritual "Po Thi" is held, which guide the spirits back to "the village of the deceased". The ritual "Po Thi" includes the offering of animals, music play, and a parody of monsters. This film witnesses the ritual "Po Thi", despite the influences of modernization and globalization on Vietnam, survive instead of fading away.
