Empathic Audition is a single-channel video work. The artwork revisits the times via a letter written by Lee Woo Geun, a South Korean student soldier during the Korean War, to his mother. The letter was written a day before the North Korean Troop took his life. In the artwork, two actors read the letter as if they were the student soldier at the time of the Korean War. Through the simulation of emotion, the EEG device on the head scans their brainwaves in real-time, revealing their psychological and emotional status amidst the signal fluctuation.

In the artwork, whenever a sentence from the letter is read, it is followed by a short sequence of pictures being projected visually on smoke, as obscure as the recalled memory. Yet, the continual separation of the North and South Korea is like the projection on the smoke to the collective social memory, without a physical body, yet dwelling in the background of individual life. Through the study of the psychology and identity inside the human brain, the artist examines the modern history of Korea and connects the political reality, mankind, and natural condition using brain science as the language of narrative.
